Blog Post #2 – A Long Way Gone
Quote #1
“Even a twelve-year-old couldn't be trusted anymore.”
-Ishmael, page 48
This quote really surprised me, because I had no idea how bad times had become. I was shocked that boys my age, even maybe a bit less, could not be trusted. It just shows how far a war can take a country, and the madness that overcomes the country in the process. Even children could not be trusted, and in fact, they were feared by many adults. War by children is quite possibly the worst thing to happen to this world.
Ishmael, a twelve year old boy, just tries to survive his daily life. He is on the brink of death, and could be killed any second. I really feel sorry for this boy, because even though he tries to make peace, he is rarely trusted due to the fear of rebels.
How do you think life would be if children your age weren't trusted, and were branded as traitors?
Quote #2
"How many more times do we have to come to terms with death before we find safety?"
-Saidu, page 70
I think this quote that Saidu said had a big impact on me. I didn't realize how many times these boys, and many others, had faced death and survived. This quote is significant because it reminds us of how cruel a country can be when you are marked as a traitor, and how difficult it is to struggle with death every other day.
I think this quote links to me because sometimes when I do something, I am at risk most of the time. It's a bit like Russian Roulette: either you live or you die. I can see how hard it is to live every time, but have part of life taken away from you each time you face death.
How would you feel if you almost died every day? Would you be able to find peace?

Quote 1:
I think this is a good quote because it shows how far the war has gone. I like your last sentence where you put what you think not only of the quote, but also what happens "to this world". I really like the way you "set up" your sentences, they are very good!
Question 1:
I think if children my age weren't trusted, society would be very scared. I think they would be scared because there are quite a few of "us" and we could be a big "threat". I know if our society was like that I would be very frightened to just go to school (even though I knew the rumors weren't true).
Quote 2:
I like the quote you chose because I think it shows that it has really affected Saidu. It shows the toll it has on survivors of the war, and what they think about it. I like how you compared it to Russian Roulette.
Question 2: If I almost died every day I don't think I would be able to find peace, at least not for a long time. I think it would take me a very long time to get over what happened, and during that time I would probably think about horrible things that happened in the war. I would probably think why was I so lucky to make it, and not other people.
Quote 1: This quote touched me when I read this because it seems so unreal that people can let a war take control of there country. When I was reading your response to this quote, I thought that was a good way to sum up this quote. When I read a part of your response that says, "Even children could not be trusted, in fact, they were feared by many adults." I just could not believe that adults are afraid that children are going to kill them. That just doesn't even sound and I hope that never happens in America.
Question 1: Life would not be right. I believe that children are not meant to fight in wars, really no one should, but especially not children. People would not socialize like they do know, I think that people would be in their homes all the times and only come out for emergencies.
Quote 2: This quote was a good quote because it showed how many adults and children were facing death, but they survived. I think you worded this quote really good and vocabulary was well chosen.
Question 2: If I was to almost die everyday, I would not be able to find peace, I think I would just give up. I would think I was very luckily to survived from dying because most people probably would not have survived. I agree with Giuliano on how he answered this quote.
QUOTE 1:
I think this was a good choice for quotes because it really showed (like you said) how far the war had gone. Its really sad that not even children could be trusted. It would be horrible to be a mother and not even be able to trust your own child. It would also be hard to be a child alone.
Question 1: I would be really depressed if no one trusted me. I would feel so alone. I would hate that people didn't trust me when i was innocent. Like Guliano said people would be afraid of schools and there would be no teachers.
Quote 2:
I feel so bad for these boys they have almost died so many times. It must be so emotionally damaging to come so close to dying then not. I would have gave up living the boys are so strong.
Question 2: I would not be able to find peace. The stress and horror of being on the brink of dying every day would be to much for me and in to end i would have wanted to die.
