Chapter 9: A View to a Death
Perspective: Piggy
I helped kill Simon...
I can't believe it. I thought it would be a regular day, just relaxing in the pool with Ralph and them other boys. Just enjoying the phosphorescence emitting from the reflected sunlight. Staying there would have been nice, just lounging around. Exactly my idea of a good day, a day where nothing surprises me and nothing bad happens.
Too bad... something did happen. Jack invited everyone to this little feast on a pig that they had slain, and everyone went. For awhile, Ralph and I stayed in the pool, since we knew that Jack was against our side, and we didn't exactly love him either. I thought to myself what the others could be up to, so him and me went to where Jack said his “party” was.
Soon as we got to his party, we had a little meat, then Jack announced that we should play his favorite game, “circle the beast”. Soon enough, everyone was part of the “fun” even I was. We played and played, then a not-so corpulent body came out of the shadows. I didn't know what it was at the time, and I don't think anyone did, but now I'm positive it was Simon. Everyone, even me, was in kind of a trance, and we didn't know what we were doing. We beat that figure in until it was dead....
I really regret this. I can't believe I took part in killing Simon! After all the warnings he gave about the beast being inside of us, after all he's done for us, we were the ones that killed him. He was the nicest person on the island, even sticking up for me when Jack didn't feed me at the last “party”. The only sane one on this island.... gone... Now I have this empty feeling in my stomach. How could we, the islanders that were supposed to work together to make a nice and happy island, kill the only one who was nice and happy? They're mad, the lot of them. The only chance I have is for Ralph and I to be heard out, but it's not likely with Jack around. He's like a priest, spreading a new religion out, one with war paint and pigs. One against the beastie and anyone who thinks it doesn't exist.
